DIAPHRAGM: THE MYTH, THE MUSCLE, THE WEIRDNESS
If you’re working with a vocal coach or teacher and they start talking about your diaphragm, a couple of things are going to happen:
1. You’re going to will yourself to not think about birth control while this person is talking to you because it just got awkward;
2. You’re going to hear the word A LOT; and
3. You’re going to get so much conflicting information, you won’t even know what you’re supposed to learn.
I FEEL YOUR PAIN. One of my biggest pet peeves about this business is all the confusing, and often conflicting, information out there. There are about a million theories and practices for about all areas of singing, but particularly this topic, the diaphragm seems to have the most mystery and confusion around it. We’re not here for that. We’re here to sing.
In today’s video, I’m going to clear all the craziness surrounding the diaphragm, and provide some facts on what it actually does and does NOT do. More importantly, I’m going to show you how to use it as your power source in singing. It’s one of the main ways you can stay healthy and never lose your voice as a singer.
