The 12 POWER Types
(Junior Edition!)
As performers, we all have a different POWER. There are 12 POWER Types, each driven by one of 4 motivations: THE STORY, THE AUDIENCE, THE SPOTLIGHT, or THE PROJECT.
What’sYOUR POWER Type? Use the chart below to explore all of them!
Motivated by THE STORY
THE EXPERT
aka The Sage
Has anyone ever said you have an “old soul?” It doesn’t mean you’re old. It means you seem to know more than others in your class. You pay attention, take thoughtful notes, and practice your lines in front of a mirror. You don’t like to make mistakes or be misguided, so your game plan for a great performance is to learn as much about your role as possible. You are logical and truthful. Your POWER is knowledge. A character you’re most likely to play would be a role like Yoda from Star Wars.
THE DREAMER
aka The Innocent
When everyone else is inside playing video games, you’re probably outside picking flowers and noticing how the clouds above look like turtles and elephants. That’s because you appreciate the simple things in life – the things that make you smile. You have a heart of gold. You don’t ask for much, but you do ask for what’s right. You don’t like to be by yourself, so you share your excitement about anything and everything with others. Your POWER is seeing things positively. A character you’re most likely to play would be a role like Nemo from Finding Nemo.
THE DETECTIVE
aka The Explorer
It’s 9 AM and you’re in school. Boring! Your mind is outside, exploring both places you’ve been and places that only exist in your imagination. You like to figure things out on your own (even if they’re challenging) and go on adventures to places your friends have never been. You don’t like being normal, instead, you are curious. That curiosity leads you to discover things about yourself and about each role you play that make your performances even better. Your POWER is pure curiosity. A character you’re most likely to play would be a role like Dora the Explorer.
Motivated by THE AUDIENCE
THE POET
aka The Lover
Your heart warms up a stage like a cup of hot chocolate on a winter day. That’s because feelings and emotions are easy for you to convey. You can make people cry happy tears. You’re not worried about being perfect, because you know that being willing to show your true emotions makes for a better performance. Your POWER is your ability to put on an emotional performance. A character you’re most likely to play would be a role like Belle from Beauty and the Beast.
THE CLASS CLOWN
aka The Jester
What’s better than having fun? Nothing! Because having fun all the time is the name of your game. You can make the audience laugh so hard that their stomachs hurt. You don’t like to be bored or do the same thing every day, so you’re always coming up with something funny to entertain yourself and others. Your POWER is finding the fun in everything you do, no matter what’s going on around you. A character you’re most likely to play would be a role like Mike Wazowski from Monsters, Inc.
THE BEST FRIEND
aka The Everyday Gal/Guy
As a loyal friend and castmate, you’re always willing to lend a helping hand. Your kind-heartedness means you go out of your way to be friendly to everyone because working as a team is the best way to tell a story. You care deeply about everyone you work with, from your castmates to the crew, so you work hard to make sure you’re doing the best you can do. You are generous and respectful. Your POWER is telling a story that connects with your audience. A character you’re most likely to play would be a role like Winne-the-Pooh.
Motivated by THE SPOTLIGHT
THE PUNK
aka The Rebel
When someone tells you that you can’t do something, it makes you want to prove them wrong. That’s because you’re a rebel. You walk your own walk and march to the beat of your own drum. No one can tell you what to do. You don’t like being like anyone else. You believe that being yourself is the best thing you can do. You’re here to change people’s minds after all. Your POWER is being true to yourself. A character you’re most likely to play would be a role like Mulan.
THE SUPERHERO
aka The Hero
Just when you think you can’t do something, you feel a burst of courage – like you can do ANYTHING. Because you actually can. There’s no one braver than you. When you step out onto stage or get in front of that mic, you feel like you are the captain of a ship. Like you got this. You perform with realness and honesty. You don’t like disappointment, so your game plan for a great performance is to practice, practice, practice. Your POWER is never giving up. A character you’re most likely to play would be a role like Princess Merida from Brave.
THE WIZARD
aka The Magician
You are curious, clever, the type of character who can take your audience for a magical ride. You might even know some magic tricks, or riddles, or have a secret talent up your sleeve. Even though you surprise your audience at times (they’ve never seen anyone like you!), you don’t like to be surprised yourself, so you work hard to craft a vision of your performance that you bring to life in front of the camera, or on stage. Your POWER is making dreams come true. A character you’re most likely to play would be a role like Willy Wonka from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
Motivated by THE PROJECT
THE CLASS PRESIDENT
aka The Ruler
Stage fright? Nah. You’re the last person to get stage fright. That’s because you’re a natural-born leader. You’re not shy to lead the way. In fact, you have a way of speaking that makes others stop and listen to what you have to say. You don’t like to get confused, so you put a lot of energy into knowing all aspects of a production. You might even know your co-star’s lines, too! Your POWER is leadership. A character you’re most likely to play would be a role like Moana.
THE COACH
aka The Caregiver
You’re the one it seems everyone comes to for answers. You care deeply about how the audience feels and you want them to enjoy the whole show. You don’t like it when others are selfish, but you do like to make sure others feel seen. You don’t really like standing out in the spotlight. Instead, you prefer to be an important part of the bigger picture. Your performance makes an audience feel empowered to achieve anything. Your POWER is compassion. A character you’re most likely to play would be a role like Mary Poppins.
THE ARTIST
aka The Creator
You are bold, imaginative, and unique. You know that if you can dream it, you can create it. An artist is who you are and who you want to be, and no one can stop you. You make the audience inspired to express themselves – just like you do. You don’t like the idea of a boring or poor performance, so you’re not afraid of doing something bold. Your POWER is creativity. A character you’re most likely to play would be a role like Remy from Ratatouille.
Katti is an unforgettable voice instructor. I came to Katti when I was 18 years old because I wanted to improve my musical theatre sound. I had absolutely no clue how to belt before beginning [Unlimited Vocal Health™] and when I graduated from Circle in the Square Theatre School in New York City four years later, I was the top belter in my class. The more lessons I took the more my confidence as a singer and an all around performer grew.
Katti is BRILLIANT!!! I never thought I would be able to belt, but I was definitely proven wrong! Thanks to my ONE LESSON with Katti I have just landed a role in “Shout! The Mod Musical” and will be healthily belting my face off!
Katti Power is bar-none, hands-down, one of the very best voice teachers out there. I’ve been singing for 23 years, and have had several teachers over the years, from NYC to LA. Many of my teachers have been good, but I learned more in one lesson with Katti than I did several months with other teachers.
Katti…helped me realize that my voice will always be there, and I just need to trust that it knows what to do. The biggest change was our work with how forward my belt is going. I had learned how to do it before, but something wasn’t clicking for me to keep it forward. Katti listened to my fear about having true power in my voice and allowed me to have a safe place to start the work to let myself be heard. I ended up belting a note I had tried to… belt for 10 years!
Now that I have had that hour session I know how to overcome my straining and relax my throat when singing up high. The way Katti teaches, the illustrations she gives, and the exercises she uses help me to understand in a way I’d never thought about before…Knowing how quickly she fixed my problem, I feel extremely confident that she would be able to help anyone else…
I feel like I finally learned the secret of singing I’ve been looking for all my life! I always felt like my teachers didn’t quite “get” my voice and there was something either I really wasn’t getting or they really were not teaching. Now I know what it is! Thank you Katti!!
[Katti] is the best singing coach I've ever had. I love working with her because she's so supportive, she has such a great ear, and she can get to the heart of any of my problems right away. She's positive, very knowledgeable, and most of all - one of the biggest reasons I would highly recommend Katti is that she's a great human being.
I had the honor of working with Katti right before the Talent Quest National Competition. In only a few short lessons she had me miles above where I started out. Her methods help you stretch your range while keeping your vocal health. She continuously helped me get better each time we met.
No joke, Katti Power is a complete and utter bad ass. She’ll turn you into one as well if you give her the chance.
I use to think my voice just couldn’t sing certain notes in certain ways, but that is completely false! I wish I had known these techniques back when I was struggling and performing every day. And knowing how to sing in my uncomfortable areas without hurting my voice is amazing. I feel like I could sing almost anything now!!
Thank you so much for believing in me and for helping me become who I am today… You changed my life Katti.
I’m so excited – I got the role I told you I was called back for (the initial audition consisted of a monologue and my singing “That’s Rich,” which I had worked with you in my VIP session)! Thank you so much, Katti, for your training! I’m thrilled, and will continue to make the efforts to sing without fear and apply the proper technique so I can sing without getting fatigued.
I can sing higher again and I’m more confident in my belting abilities, as well as my breath support!
I’m most excited to know the difference between legit and belt voice and practice choosing how to sing and speak intentionally in a way that is healthiest for me.
I’m really not sure where I would be without you. You have given me such confidence in so many areas and have given me the skills to take my performing to the next level.
I believe you can always improve your craft, so for the past few years I’ve been working with internationally acclaimed vocal teacher Katti Power.
I’m singing songs I did not think I would ever be able to sing!
Thank you, Katti. I’ve learned so much from you; no words can express my gratitude!
